The Science behind Absorbency: Why Various Liquids require Different Rags

Cleaning a spill plays an important role in keeping the environment clean and maintained. However, what is more important is how to clean them properly. It is understandable to be confused about choosing the right type of cleaning rag or towel since there are many types.

How to choose the right one? To find the answer to this question, you first need to understand what kind of liquid spill you will encounter.

Generally found spills in households, offices, and industries are of three kinds:

Low-Viscosity Liquids

Medium-Viscosity Liquids

High-Viscosity Liquids

What does viscosity mean? Well, in simple terms, viscosity refers to the property of a liquid that determines whether the liquid is thin or thick and whether it can flow easily or not. Low-viscosity liquids like water, juice, coffee, or cleaning solutions are thin, flow easily, and spread quickly on the surface. High-viscosity liquids, which are thick in nature, do not flow easily and take time to spread on the surface

Understanding Absorbency

Absorbency, in simplest way can be explained as a cloth’s ability to soak up and hold the liquid. This feature or property of the cleaning rag/towel determines how good it is for a particular cleaning task that requires soaking up liquids, drying surfaces, removing dirt and dust, etc.

The fiber structure, thickness, and surface area of a cloth determine its absorbency.

  • Fiber Structure: Natural fibers like cotton have hollow fibers, which make them a perfect choice for soaking up water-based liquids, while synthetic (artificial) fibers like polyester are ideal for cleaning and holding up oil-based liquids.
  • Thickness: A thick cloth can absorb a bigger liquid spill easily. Their material has more space to hold onto liquids making them highly absorbent.
  • Surface Area: The larger the surface area of the cleaning rag/towel, the larger the surface it can cover. This determines how quickly the cloth can cover the spill.

Now that we have understood the types of liquids and cleaning cloths. Let us now learn what kind of rag/towel we should be using to clean up a specific liquid spill.

Low-Viscosity Liquids

These liquids can be cleaned swiftly; they are thin and have easy flow. The only downside is that they spread very quickly and have a large surface, depending on the quantity of spills. To clean such a spill, we need an absorbent cloth and preferably of large size.

Ideal cleaning cloths are Cotton Rags and Terry Towels.

  • Cotton Rags are composed of natural fibers that expand in size when wet. These fibers can hold a good amount of liquid, making them absorbent and help dry the surface quickly.
  • Terry Towel Rags have looped fibers that allow them to absorb great amounts of fluids. The loops trap water very well, making them a perfect choice for soaking up spills, cleaning dishes and kitchen countertops, washing hands, etc.

Medium-Viscosity Liquids

Medium-Viscosity liquids such as cooking oils, milk, and sauces are thicker as compared to water-based liquids, but they can still flow easily. To clean these liquids, you might need cleaning rags/towels that not only have greater absorbing capacity but also a stronger material composition.

The best option for such fluids is either a microfiber or oil-only sorbent pad.

  • Microfiber Cloths are a mixture of synthetic and natural fibers that are extremely fine. These fibers are specially made to soak up spills like oil in the kitchens and sauces on the dinner table. They are a reasonable choice for cleaning up dairy products as well.
  • Oil-only Sorbents are made specifically to soak up oil spills. They have a feature that repels water and adsorbs* only oil. These sorbent pads are recommended when cleaning oil-based spills.

High-Viscosity Liquids

Syrups, grease, and heavy oils fall into this category. These liquids are very thick in nature and sticky, making them hard to clean. For a heavy-duty challenge, you need specialized or heavy-duty cleaning cloth.

  • Cheesecloth is a great choice for these kinds of messes. Their loose weave fabric and open structure help in absorbing liquids. They are also used for straining purposes and places where a delicate touch is needed.
  • Heavy-Duty Microfiber cloths are made of strong fibers and specially for tasks that cannot be completed by a normal cleaning rag. They are thick and can handle these liquids without breaking down.
  • Another great choice used in many industrial settings is the sorbent pads. These pads are made for the sole purpose of cleaning such spills with ease. They are durable and highly absorbent. Oil-only sorbent pads adsorb* oily liquids while repelling water so that they can perform at their maximum capacity without them being drenched in water, which is not the main issue.

Multipurpose Cleaning

For environments where you might encounter a variety of liquid spills, like in households, offices, etc., multipurpose cleaning rags are a perfect choice. These rags can handle spills like water, oil, light chemicals, and other similar liquids.

  • Baby Knit Diapers are super absorbent and soft. They are used for delicate surfaces and general cleaning in offices and homes for wiping down furniture, electronics, etc.
  • Yellow Dusters can clean up fine dust particles and light spills. They are made soft, so they do not scratch delicate surfaces while cleaning them.

Choosing the right rag is not just about its material; some good quality rags do not clean up spills like others do. We must understand the kind of liquid spill we are dealing with to know what kind of cleaning rag is the perfect choice.
