LEATHER GLOVES CARE INSTRUCTIONS YOU SHOULD KNOW

The importance of wearing gloves at work is best understood by those who use them on a regular basis.

Professionals in construction, automotive, welding, oil and gas, manufacturing industries know what we mean.

Investing in high quality gloves is not the end of your worries, caring for and maintaining the gloves is just as important. Your care choices determine whether your gloves last for years or just a season.

Gloves used in industries mentioned above are mostly made of leather, since it has heat protection capabilities and stronger puncture resistance as compared to fabric or cotton gloves. The leather material makes these gloves ideal for welding, construction, mechanical repairs, and other manual jobs in tough and sturdy environments.

According to a report by Grand View Research, the global leather goods market was valued at $242.85 billion in 2022, with expectations to grow at an annual growth rate of 6.6% from 2023 to 2030. This growth is a result of increased demand for high-quality safety gloves across various industries.

Why the increased demand?

  • Durable: High-quality leather is a material that when taken care of can last for years.
  • Comfort: Leather sits and molds very well on a structure, such as your hands, that provides easy movement of fingers and a strong grip, giving you a perfect fit, making your work much easier.
  • Protection: Safety gloves made from leather offer protection against cuts, impacts, abrasions, and punctures.

Understanding Leather Care

It is a fact that not caring for your leather gloves on a regular basis can cut down their lifespan by up to 50%.

Not drying the gloves completely can cause mold buildup. When leather is wet, it loses about 30% of its strength. That should tell you all you need to know.

How to properly clean and maintain your leather gloves?

Well before we start the cleaning and maintenance process, it is very important to understand that worn out and majorly damaged gloves are better to be replaced than to be maintained. When a glove is worn out or majorly damaged, it does not offer protection at its full potential, this poses a risk to injuries to the hands, setting you back at work, affecting your physical health, and leading to costly hospital bills.

Now that we are clear on this situation, let's continue towards maintaining and cleaning them.

Cleaning

Clean your gloves with a soft brush or a cloth, especially after exposure to dirt and oils. It is important to clean the gloves after a few minimal uses or one heavy use.

Use a soft cloth and dampen it in water, clean with a light hand without using excess force. For deep cleaning, use a mild detergent. Do not soak the gloves in water as it will absorb excess moisture causing the gloves to become stiff.

Conditioning

Condition your gloves every week to keep them fresh and away from crinkles. Use a high-quality leather conditioner to gently apply and condition your gloves, use a beeswax solution as well to make them waterproof and give them an extra protective layer.

Drying

Be sure to dry your gloves in a dry place at room temperature. Avoid leaving them out in direct sunlight as it might damage and harden the leather, reducing its durability and comfort. Always ensure your gloves are dry not just on the outside, but also on the inside. Flip them inside out and use hair dryer on the lowest setting to speed up the process.

Storing
