What's in Your Spill Kits? A Deep Dive into Essential Tools for Every Business.

One of the most important tools in maintaining smooth day-to-day operations is hard work, good spirit and your cleaning essentials. Industries encounter a lot of different kinds of cleaning challenges, both minor and major. To maintain a clean workspace, industries use rags to handle messes and spills.

Wiping rags and towels can be found in almost every industrial setting, Spill Kits, however, are not as popular, but just as, if not more, crucial.

Did you know that many industries that deal with hazardous materials and chemicals are required by law to have a spill kit in possession.

Examples of such industries are:

  • Manufacturing (Chemical and Oil & Gas)
  • Healthcare
  • Transportation
  • Food & Beverage
  • Construction
  • Energy & Utilities

Other small-scale industries do not have spill kits in place simply because they are not required by the law. Nevertheless, it is very critical to have spill kits, industries mostly use wiping rags and towels to handle messes and spills, which to some extent can be beneficial, but eventually, accidents happen that cannot be contained with just rags.

Let us learn what components a spill kit contains and how important they could prove to be.

At Wiping Hub, We Offer Three Main Categories Of Spill Kits

Title

Universal Spill Kits are made for general purpose uses to tackle almost all kinds of liquids such as water, juice, oil, grease, and even mild chemicals. Available in sizes of 5, 20, 30, and 55 Gallons containing essential cleaning products. Universal sorbent products are generally color coded ‘grey’ to differentiate them from other sorbents.

Let’s take a deeper look into each component and understand their purpose.

1. Container: With each spill kit you get either a pail, lab pack, or a poly drum according to the size of the kit that keeps the components of the spill kit safe from damage of all kinds.

2. Sorbent Pads: These pads are used for wiping and maintenance applications; sorbent pads are made solely for the purpose of absorbing liquids, cleaning grease and grime effectively without losing their integrity or tearing up.

3. Sorbent Socks: These are long tube-shaped sorbents that create a kind of boundary which is essential for containing spills that do not let it flow further and disrupt operations, damage machinery or furniture, and keeping the floor dry and safe to protect employees from slips and falls. These socks are generally placed on the round surrounding a machine that is leaking or could leak creating a messy floor.

4. Goggles: When handling or managing a spill, goggles serve a crucial role in protecting the eyes from splashes of liquids, harmful chemicals, dirt and debris that employees usually encounter during spill situations

5. Gloves: To ensure complete safety, a pair of gloves is provided with the spill kit so the sorbent pads and socks can be handled without worrying about the nature of the spill. Gloves ensure a smooth cleaning process without causing any unnecessary workplace accidents or health issues.

6. Disposable Bag: Discard your used pads and socks safely in the disposable bag provided with the kit so as to differentiate them from other garbage and trash.

7. Non-Sparking Shovel: A non-sparking shovel is a tool that is made from substances that do not create a spark when they come in contact with hard surfaces or where friction is a factor. These shovels are very crucial in situations where a small spark could be the reason for ignition thus causing a fire which is very difficult to control, and which could cause significant health and property damage.

*Note: This shovel comes with a 30- and 55-Gallon Spill Kit.

8. Sorbent Pillows: Highly effective at absorbing spills, these sorbents are one of the strongest crafted and they can be easily stuffed or placed in tight spaces or around/underneath equipment, offering a flexible easy-to-use solution for liquid containment.

*Note: Sorbent Pillows are available with a 55 Gallon Kit.

Made specifically to handle oil and petroleum-based liquids, Oil Spill Kits work exceptionally well in containing oil spills on land and in water. Large oil spills in oceans near oil rigs are contained and taken care of using large oil-only sorbent booms. These sorbents adsorb oil-based liquids while repelling water to maximize absorption. Available are 5, 30, and 55 Gallons. Oil-Only sorbents generally come in bright white color to differentiate them from other sorbents and to tell when they are to be replaced after they have absorbed their maximum capacity.

Components in an oil-only spill kit includes:

1. Container: A pail or a drum is offered with each spill kit that safely stores all the essential cleaning products required to tackle spills of petroleum-based liquids.

2. Oil-Only Sorbent Pads: Used popularly in marine environments, oil & gas industries, automotives and workshops, manufacturing industries, aviation, and much more. These pads are the quick and effective solution to containing spills that are rather difficult to handle with cleaning cloths. Their ability to repel water makes them the perfect choice in marine environments.

3. Oil-Only Sorbent Socks: Oil-Only sorbent socks are essential in industries that regularly deal with oil, petroleum, and other liquids of similar nature. They are wrapped around machinery creating a barrier, used on water to contain and adsorb oil spills effectively.

4. Oil-Only Sorbent Booms: These sorbents are similar to the cylindrical shape of sorbent socks. Sorbent booms are basically used to contain spills on a much larger surface both on land and water. Clips at the end of booms attach and overlap to increase the length according to your need. They are mostly used in lakes, ponds, oceans, etc. and they work very well, even during rain.

5. Oil-Only Sorbent Pillows: These are highly absorbent sorbents that repel water, mostly used at ship docks and marine environment as they are placed on the leak or spill to quickly soak up minimizing environmental impact. Their pillow shape construction allows them to be placed in tight spaces.

6. Goggles: It is very common for splashes to damage the eyes and vision during maintenance. Goggles are offered with the spill kits to protect you while handling and cleaning up oil spills.

8. Gloves: Gloves ensure safe handling of soaked sorbent pads, socks, booms, and pillows without getting grease, oil, or other petroleum-based liquids on your hands, loosening your grip and damaging your skin.

9. Hazardous Waste Label: A hazardous waste label is an essential addition to any spill kit, distinguishing the type of waste making it easier for safe disposal by the authorities.  .

10. Disposable Bag: Discard your used pads and socks safely in the disposable bag provided with the kit so as to differentiate them from other garbage and trash.

4. Hazmat Sorbent Pillows: Commonly used in industrial, environmental, and manufacturing settings, made to have the highest absorption rate. Their unique design allows them to absorb hazardous spills while containing them.

5. Goggles: Providing protection against hazardous chemicals, solvents, acids, and other dangerous liquids during cleanup. In some industrial settings, dust, debris, and other particles may be present and may be the cause of damage.

6. Gloves: Protecting your hands and skin from coming into direct contact with toxic chemicals causing irritation and tissue damage. Gloves act as a barrier between the liquid and hands ensuring safe cleaning.

8. Disposable Bag: Discard your used pads and socks safely in the disposable bag provided with the kit so as to differentiate them from other garbage and trash.
